Commemorating Cambodia's war dead and celebrating freedom from foreign rule, the Independence Monument is one of Phnom Penh's most important and recognizable structures. Several newsagents are clustered on Sihanouk east of the monument. The park west of the monument is a site of constant activity. By day people stroll the park while joggers skirt the outer rim, In the evening, little food stands and fruit vendors set up near Sothearos. Also of interest, check out furniture and rattan shops grouped along the curve of Sothearos near Norodom.
